A quick read, and an amazing story.

This book should be an eye opener to anyone who believes that poverty is a wall that prevents one from climbing out. Inspiring and down to earth, my ninth graders loved reading about a Bklyn kid making in their neighborhood! Bravo to Mr. McBride and to Ruth McBride for reaching ever upwards at whatever costs. I am currently in search of all the free museum trips, concerts & plays I can find. I, too, will drag my youngones to all the culture I can. Thank you, Ruth!

"I have read this great book, and also I only wished I can actually see this actual family by the way the book was written by Mr. McBride and probably go back in time to see this struggling family do their hardwork and survive."

This was an incredible story of a family that had a definate story to tell. I highly recommend it. It will make you see people in this world very different. Ruth and James are incredible people.

The book was a good story. I liked how he made the tribute to his mother, and shared her story.

I think this book really touches the reader. You see how crutial the relationship between the white mother and the black son really is. I think James is an excellent author and that people of all ages should read this book!

James McBride's did a wonderful job at depicting his mother's life story as well as his own in the inspiring true story The Color of Water. The story of Mrs. McBrides interacial family was an courageous and outstanding one that helped me and could easily help anyone else of any different racial background to understand what it was like to be a young jewish woman in love with two black men and have 12 children by them in a time where that kind of thing was totally unexceptable. This was such an enjoyable book, I could barely put it down. It is so beautifully written that i felt as if I were in it, going through everything they went through with them, not just simply reading it from the outside. I would surely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading because it is a true prize.
