In my 12th grade Honors English class, the students were asked to read The Color of Water by James McBride. This memoir was very interesting in the terms that it is similar to a memoir that I read last year named Black, White and Jewish. Both memoirs were about bi-racial children of Jewish and African-American background. McBride's memoir was a touching one. It was so sweet to see how a grown man could open up his heart, and still have enough pride to call his mother "mommy". Not only does this memoir show the struggles of a bi-racial family, but it shows you how hatred can be found all over the world. You have to be strong to survive, and indeed Ruth McBride was. I would reccomend this book to anyone. Not only people of bi-racial backgrounds, but people who love to read a good book. This is a sweet, loving, and heartfelt memoir that should be read by people of all ages.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I liked the way the author switched from telling about his background to telling about his mother's background. The book helped me understand what it is like to have parents of different races. I was able to put myself in McBrides place as I read the book. I would definitely recommend this book.

This book is amazing. Once you begin reading you cannot stop. You will have to remind yourself that these events did actually happen to real people.
