Krakauer does an excellent job of documenting the life and death of a literary wannabe. Chris should have stopped trying to be Thoreau long before he got to Alaska. As a resident of Alaska, I know what he did was foolhardy. We take more supplies than he did when we go on a two day backpacking trip. There are too many ways to die here; it's not a place for idealism. Alaska is a harsh mistress. Krakauer did an excellent job of describing the life of one of many fools who wander up here and find themselves grossly overmatched. This book left me feeling sorry for his family, but without much sympathy for Chris.

excellent book. Chris get under your skin and you can not get him out. It is a book that makes you think about life and how everyone you know is affected by the decisions that you make or do not make. I highly advise everyone read this book

The book Into The Wild was about a kid who packs up and leaves his family and friends to go off into the wilderness. Chris wasn't prepared to go off by himself. This caused Chris to die, anyone willing to pack up and leave without telling anyone where he's going and without taking enough supplies to live is asking for a death wish and thats what Chris basicly did. I really didn't care for this book. This book was the type of book that gave some students mainly boys the idea to go off in to the wilderness just to see if they could make it. The book was very slow it put me to sleep half the time. Sure the book has lots of facts, but hhow do we know they are all true? We dont none of us really knows what happened while he was out there. I wouldn't tell people they should read this book. Unless they are the type of people who like boring books with facts that may not be true. Then this book would be the book they should read.

I was required to read "Into the Wild" by John Krakauer for a class I am taking. I found the book interesting, yet creepy at the same time. Krakauer tells you immediately that he is going to talk about a boy who dies trying to live out the life of his dreams. And from the beginng on is like a reading a book backwards. The fact that this is a true story about a kid who died is what makes it sad and creepy. However, the story is definately worth reading, if you are into that survival novel type story. It is amazing to read about how one person with no possesions or companions could effect so many people whom he knew for so short a time.
This book questions whether Chris McCandless was a green and stupid kid or a hopeless romantic trying to live in the final frontier. However, as you read through it, you are forced to make oppinions of him yourself. Also, the fact that the author actually went to the places chris went to in Alaska and cares so much about the story, makes it all the better to read.
