Yeah, besides the fact that Eragon has lotr elves and dwarves and names and story elements and places and characters in it... its really a lot different. Jeff, I see your point that Harry potter not aparently evident in Paolini's book. But the fact is, Lord of The Rings was obviously copied - yes copied for many ideas as well as word for word names. Tolkien's writing does not deserve to be cut off and hacked together with such crude writing (by comparison) that is Eragon, it just makes the book a bad read for anyone who has read lotr.
But I'd like to say that I am hopefull that the next book will not have such blatent copying and Paolini's writing will improve.

IM 16. I just reading this book for the second time since Ive had it. I have never read such an amzing and intrigueing book. Hats of to Paolini. This book is very fast paced but at the same time it is detailed. There is a wide range of characters, and a great story line. Some people say that it is like other books such as LOTR or Harry Potter. Other then the fact that Eragon has elves and dwarves in it, it is nothing like LOTR and especially not Harry Potter. Ive read many science fiction/fantasy books, and this book is the best one yet. I strongly recommend it to kids and adults of all ages.

Well, I must admit that I was relieved to find other people on this board who were not overly impressed by this book. I didn't like it. (I'll say it simply.) Although the story was fairly fast-paced and pretty easy reading, I agree with the people who stated that most of Paolini's material was not original. When I read the book, I could easily pick out ideas that came from many different authors, including material from Lord of the Rings, (forget the nine companions, okay? There's more to LOTR than that!) Harry Potter, and Dragonriders of Pern. As a starting work of fiction, Eragon is okay. Hopefully as Paolini continues writing he will be able to come up with his own ideas and build off of them, instead of using other people's ideas. I would recommend this book for people interested in fantasy (but without the guts to delve into authors like Tolkein.) If you want original fantasy, this book will surely disappoint.

This was an asum book!! So what if it has a lot of simularities with the Lotr? It must be getting harder and harder to write books. Almost every idea has been used at least once. anyway there is always a batrayer, a good guy, A wise helper, and enemy in a fantasy books. Also It as asum details. And like someeles said At lest he didn't make boring spots like in the golden compass series. I love this book. I've read more books than anyone i know and i think this is one of my top favorits. i'm a fantasy freck. you know with the dragons, wizards, and knights.

This Book is one of the best i've ever read. Some of the best points, is that it gets moving right away, and the characters really pull you into the story. Also, the theme of the story is great. Yes it is similar to many other books, but Paolini does an awsome job of diversing it from other novels as well. The story is also unique in the number of characters, haveing a large amount, that all contribute to the overall theme of the story. This is why I rate Eragon a 5/5.

This book is great!!! It's like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings rolled into one. It has mystical creatures, evil vilans, and cool heros. With tons of twists and turns, and lots of action it's easy to want to read it in one night. I also liked how it got right into the story unlike some books you can't even bare to read 10 pages into. The one thing I didn't like was how it ended leaving so much untold. I know it takes a long time to write a book but now I have to wait nearly nine months just for the second one when it took me two days to read the first. All in all its a great book but in the time we wait for the second one we forget the first. In my opinion it gets a 4.

I agree with johny west on this one.
Come on guys, read more books! You just cant compare lotr with Eragon, its like comparing celery to steak (or something like that).
I've seen a lot of *5* reviews that compliment Eragon's moving plot. Well sure the plot moves fast but its not the speed that counts, its the quality. Am I right? Besides, If you want a quick read at least go for a good quick read. Try Ender's Game, it's ten times better that Eragon.

best book i have ever read. I have read it 15 times and each time it gets better. The only thing is it kind of copies Lord of the Rings but since its the best book ever i don't really give.
