Birds are symbols of peace, freedom, and hope. These are things everyone wants. Some of us are lucky enough to have them, some are not.

The book cover featuring blue birds, that are similar to traditional Mexican Talavera tiles and they are surrounded by barbed wire. To me birds mean freedom and have the ability to travel wherever they can fly. think that the cover represents the fact that people are being kept from going where they can be safe.

The birds represent flight, flying overhead (oversight), freedom, song, and distance.

TO be honest, I hadn't even noticed! They could be doves with an olive branch or flight or a special part of her (Lydia's) list of favorite books....I just thought they were pretty and there weren't a lot of dramatic, eye-catching options for this story.

Because they are encaged in barbed wire as Lydia feels she is and they yearn to be free which is the basis for her forced excursion with her son.

This question reminds me of Maya Angelou's poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." The caged bird sings because he's tied up, his wings are clipped. The free bird has too much life to deal with. No time to sing. In the case of this novel, Lydia and company are beautiful birds with no time to sing as they are too busy striving for their freedom from the cage. Flight.

Birds are free to fly wherever they please. There are no borders for them. Maybe the birds on the cover symbolize the ability of Lydia and Luca to make their journey and cross all borders.

Possibly because birds are migratory.
