Culture Corner: Fleabag, George Eliot and Handel

Each week, we're sharing cultural experiences you can access from home during the pandemic, such as online concerts, theater and art. This week we suggest:

  • Handel's Messiah live from the Sydney Opera House
  • Ted Talk: Paper beats plastic? Sustainability strategist Leyla Acaroglu on how to rethink environmental folklore and let go of tightly-held green myths and think bigger in order to create.
  • Marian and George, a BBC radio play about Marian Evans (aka Victoria-era writer George Eliot), written by Anna Linstrum. If you're unfamiliar with the outline of Evans' life, the BBC offers a brief summary which will likely enhance your enjoyment of the play.
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge's solo show performed at the Wyndham Theatre in Soho, London, which inspired her Emmy-winning comedy Fleabag. 100% of the £4 minimum fee (approx $6) is donated to charity.

Also, check out our "beyond the book" articles that explore a historical, cultural or contextual aspect of every book we feature.
