About this book

Book Summary

After several years stuck as a ghost, Sky Flores learns to reconnect with the living again with the help of her handsome neighbor in this lush romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Witch of Wild Things.

Like her sisters, Sage and Teal, Sky Flores has a touch of magic, and it's caused nothing but heartache. Not only did she disappear into the woods years ago and reappear with no rational explanation, she's also more comfortable talking to animals than to people. Different and misunderstood, Sky is shunned in the small town of Cranberry.

Sky's neighbor, Adam Noemi, has his own problems. After being laid off from a prestigious newspaper, Adam, ever the ambitious reporter, needs a big headline to redeem his career. Enter Sky, a girl with a story that news outlets have been chasing for years. Sky agrees to grant Adam an exclusive interview on one condition: that he befriend Sky, in a very public way, to prove to everyone in Cranberry that she's not an outcast.

As Sky shares her experiences with Adam, something much bigger than a simple agreement begins to grow between them. But for love to take root, Adam will have to take a leap towards a life that defies expectations, and Sky must open her heart – full of flora and fauna and mystical energies – to his curious mind.

Please be aware that this discussion guide will contain spoilers!
  1. For much of Sky's story, she feels like everyone around her is surpassing her, like she just can't keep up when it comes to "adulting." Have you ever felt like you were left behind like this by your friends and family? What do you think of the way Sky resolves this?
  2. Sky says of Adam's need for "proof" of her gift with animals that the mindset he encompasses believes "a thing must be seen in order to be known." Do you agree or disagree with this belief? How can a thing be known without "seeing" it or otherwise proving it in a Western scientific way?
  3. How do you think communicating with each other virtually and anonymously helped Adam and Sky become closer offline?
  4. At what point do you think Adam fell in love with Sky...

Media Reviews

"Come for the romance, get swallowed up by the lush, atmospheric writing and Latine magic." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Gilliland's sequel to Lightning in Her Hands is another enchanting magical-realism romance with well-developed characters and engaging, lyrical writing. Readers will get swept up in Sky and Adam's story." —Library Journal (starred review)

"Sky's story is often heart-wrenching as she both fears and searches for someone to connect with. The lack of communication between her and her sisters will have readers aching at the relatability of families naturally growing apart. Adam will have readers cheering as he brings Sky out of her shell and shows her how worthy she is of love. Fans of fake dating will love this take on a classic trope." —Booklist

Enjoyed Overall
Overall I enjoyed the story. I haven't read the first two in the series and wasn't familiar with the sisters which might have helped understand the family elements more (missed that this was a series.) Sometimes wasn't sure what the main theme was - magic or relationships or ghosts although I do think the story worked. Might look for the first two books.

All in All
All in all The Magic of Untamed Hearts was an enjoyable and entertaining read. I was intrigued by the enchantment connecting the humans with the earth. The main characters were also quirky and fun as well as the mystery that was surrounding the lives. I did find the intimate moments too detailed and could have been left to the reader's imagination. With that caution, I would recommend the book to friends.

A little bit of everything and a protagonist worth rooting for
This was an easy and fun read! I truly enjoyed how Sky was developed as a character. From the missing years of her life, to the loneliness, to the gift, to the aspects of her behavior that definitely put her on the spectrum, she (not surprisingly) made the book come alive. Even if the spicy scenes were a bit more graphic than they needed to be, they were an integral part to Sky discovering (rediscovering) herself. The online exchange between Adam and Sky also had a "You've Got Mail" vibe to it that was enjoyable, and I loved the way that the author wove in all of the various family issues in a way that did them justice without overwhelming the rest of the story. I do wish that the ending wasn't so abrupt and included more about the "cult."

Worth the read
Whimsical story of a young girl with special gifts that make her the outcast of the society. She struggles to find her way back to her true self, her family, love, and friends. Unexpected help comes from the grumpy next door neighbor.

A fun read
This is not a book I would normally recommend select to read. Magic gifts to a family of women bring fun into the book, but the theme of "fitting in" hits home with many of us-/no matter what your gifts may be. It's also a love story. I could have done without the explicit sex in this book, but I realize that appeals to many others.

Believable Magic
The Magic of Untamed Hearts was an unexpected delight. There was so much about the novel that drew me in. I enjoyed the magical aspect, especially Sky's ability to communicate with creatures. I thought the characters were well developed and relatable, particularly the Flores sisters. I like quirky characters and Sky definitely is one to remember. My reading is generally more tame, but if you realize this is more along the lines of Hocus Pocus meets Shades of Gray you will be prepared. This novel is the third in the series about these magical sisters and it makes me want to read the other two, it would be interesting to see how they treat Sky's eight year disappearance,
I think any reader open to a fun, sexy novel would enjoy this book. Thanks to Bookbrowse and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this book.
