Until the Next Time: A Novel
by Kevin Fox
Interesting Concept that Struggles with Execution (2/20/2012)
Until the Next Time part historical fiction and part religious/reincarnation philosophy presented in a creative format. I liked the idea of the novel, and I enjoyed reading about a different culture and set of beliefs. Unfortunately, the writing and execution made it difficult for me to get into the story. I did not feel much connection or interest to the characters, and most especially to the love story.
Next to Love
by Ellen Feldman
Soon Forgotten (7/19/2011)
Next to Love is an ambitious novel that suffered from trying to fit too much story into too short of a book. Three very different women face challenges that should have created a real emotional impact given the subject matter. However, I never felt connected to any of the characters. Trying to tell their stories over so many years left less room for the development of their characters. The pacing and cohesion of the book always felt off. There were some moments of great writing and times when I did want to see what would happen next. I do think there was a lot of potential. Overall it was a book that I do not regret reading, but not one that I will remember for long.
Turn of Mind
by Alice LaPlante
Unreliable narration at its best! (5/10/2011)
LaPlante's brilliant writing made me feel that I was suffering dementia along with the main character. The mystery element is the central plot but is not what makes this book interesting. It is getting to know the flawed characters through the unreliable narration. I did not want to put the book down, and I am still thinking about it a week later.
