"What We Can Know: A Novel" by Ian McEwan (9/13/2025)
Having read both "Atonement" and "Amsterdam" by Ian McEwan, I was truly excited to read his latest novel, "What We Can Know." This most recent work deserves the highest praise for its structure, character development, settings, transitions, and level of suspense regarding the plot. Having employed a dual timeline in this novel, McEwan has paid close attention to dates and events. The author has touched upon issues that are of global importance in the present time. He also invites the reader to ponder the role of both history and the future in our present existence. I was actively engaged and totally immersed in his storytelling from the first to the last page!
McEwan's power over the written word is truly masterful as he has chosen the precise word to evoke the most accurate meaning of his prose. I am awed by his ability to describe his characters so thoroughly that they became real in my mind as I read his work. The richness of the author's vocabulary in his descriptive passages left me with clear mental images of each setting and place that I encountered in this novel. I recommend this masterpiece to anyone who appreciates the value of the written word and its effect on those who read it.
