A new raw talent is here
It is very clear why this striking book is piquing the interest of 2022 award winners already. A very unique written voice, author Leila Mottley brings this story to life through the eyes of seventeen year old Kiara Johnson. A girl who had to own responsibility for rent of a flat fast after losing her father and mother being in a halfway house, she has people who look out for her and care but no one to help her with money and debt. Finding it an easy earner she falls into casual prostitution, it makes her sick to her stomach but pays the way. In one such situation she is picked up by corrupt police officers who make her their own to pawn for use at poker games and amongst friends. The sordid landscape starts to change when she is offered a way out if she testifies against these police officers, but it is a big risk to what she may lose by going through the ordeal.
