hmmm this book was an awesome book. if i could give it more out of 5, i would. the story told in this book was awesome, and i am so glad i read it. i felt a connection with stargirl, b/c things run about the same at my school and i (along with a few others,) choose to stand out rather than fit in. the whole idea behind the book was a good one, but the way jerry expressed the idea and told the story was beautiful and moving. however i dont know if i liked the ending a whole lot, i wish <<edited for potential plot spoiler>>....i think jerry should right a sequel book *hint hint*

This book is awesome. It tells you not to go with the crowd. Be your own individual. I would recommend this book to anyone. It celebrates diviersity. This book was not confusing or disturbing, but was fun to read and very interesting!

Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, is a book about a 14 year old girl who has been home schooled her whole life, until she joins an actual school with other year 10's. At first, many people start to like her, then when she doesn't make an effort to fit in properly- cheering on other teams at sporting games and keeping her annoying, very unique personality, she starts to become unpopular by the other teens at school and her only friend ends up to be Leo Borlock- who is torn between being in love with Stargirl and ruining his own reputation by liking her. This book is about popularity, being yourself and not being someone everyone else wants you to be, going with what you believe in and not caring about what others think of you. Stargirl was unique- different to all the other girls in her grade- this may be because of her up-bringing, not knowing how 'normal' tennagers act, or maybe it was just her personality of wanting to stand out in a crowd and being 'different'. I think this book was okay because it showed girls reading it that you don't have to follow everyone else just to fit in- to be yourself and not care what others might think of you. On the other hand, I think the book could have had a more exciting plot, and I would recommend it to younger girls, maybe grade 7's or 8's, who would be interested in this type of book. I personally wasn't very interested but I'm sure it would appeal to others. I give it a 3 out of 5.
