Fishbowl
by Bradley Somer
Thinking Outside the Bowl (1/20/2016)
Such a creative take on life. The writing was well done and the characters were interesting and flawed, yet still likable. Such a cool book. Wish more people were reading this!!
The Nature of the Beast: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel, #11
by Louise Penny
Best of Series! (1/5/2016)
I have read all of Louise Penny's novels, and this ranks at the top!
All My Puny Sorrows
by Miriam Toews
excellent (6/17/2015)
This is a wonderful novel. Extremely moving and sad, and funny. Toews characters are so well written that I felt that I knew them. This would make a great book club read. A lot of discussion would for sure follow, but also quite depressing.
A Spool of Blue Thread
by Anne Tyler
Not her Best (6/17/2015)
Very disappointed with this novel. I have really enjoyed other novels by Anne Tyler. This one just spun its tale, and spun and spun. And really went no where. Halfway through the book I almost put it down, but trudged through it hoping the story would begin-and then I just wanted whatever words I was reading to end, as it never became a story. I cannot think of a single person to recommend this to, and that is saying a lot, as I have a very diverse group of friends who read very diverse things.
The First Bad Man: A Novel
by Miranda July
Raw and Awesome (5/29/2015)
This book will not be for everyone. It is gritty, bizarre, and dark, and just plain out there. Thus, I love it. July's writing is beautiful and clear to the reader, and her subject matter is randomly awesome. July has created such damaged characters within these pages that I, as a reader, could feel for them, without identifying with them. And as a result, I didn't judge the "outlandish" situations that are commonplace. Again, this is gritty and the language is raw, so may not be for everyone, but it is completely a five star book. Reminds me of Lynda Barry's "Cruddy". Brilliant.
This Is Where I Leave You
by Jonathan Tropper
excellent (5/29/2015)
I read this book a ways back, before a movie was made, and recommended it to every person I knew. I have read other novels by Tropper, and this has held up to be my favorite. Interesting story, sympathetic characters, and a very likable main man. Laughed aloud at times, and was on the verge of tears at others. An easy quick read that made me want for more.
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake: A Novel
by Aimee Bender
One of my Favs (5/29/2015)
Loved this book. Dark. Creative. The characters were just so well conceived in my opinion. I tend to like off the wall books, and ones that focus on "random" people, and this was completely up my alley. Will definitely read more from this author!!!
