A Novel
by Nikesha Elise Williams
Nadia intervened. "Tati, chill out. When I'm done, your mimi will be on her way, and then we'll go to breakfast to continue celebrating your birthday. Focus on that and let the rest slide off you like bullshit on ice."
Now it was Mimi's turn to huff, but whatever she wanted to say, she swallowed all the way down to her feet. Patent leather shoes tapped her thoughts on the metal bar of the burgundy chair, ripping wide the run in her pantyhose. Mary sang as Nadia clicked the curlers, which smoked and sizzled against the blue grease. Mimi didn't flinch. She didn't give Nadia the satisfaction.
"You done," Nadia said, snatching the cape from around her neck.
"Thank you, daughter."
