On our way back to the hotshot base Owen opened the rectangular window that separated the front cab from the rest of the buggy so he could tell us we'd been called to a fire. I'd never seen him smile before. Suddenly everyone, including me, was buzzing in their seats. My anxiety vanished. It was happening! We weren't officially available until the next morning, so Owen instructed us to get a good night's sleep. "We'll meet at 0700," he said, feigning a stern expression. "Don't be late, and drink lots of water."
