Grandma says, "If our stories survive, we will not die, even when our bodies are no longer here on this earth." The Mountains Sing is inspired by some of the experiences of the author's family. RE: What stories from your own family ...

So far I have not read anything that resonates with my own upbringing...maybe certain feelings of childhood or adolescence as a whole, but I have never found myself within a character. I am a writer and one of my favorite things about re-reading something I have written is seeing how that story was told at that time from a vantage point inside of myself.
It's fun to check in with what was going on inside of my soul when those words were being written. Authors are such a gift to me because I don't really believe it is possible to write anything without putting a piece of yourself into it. Especially fiction.
These are my closest friends...the dories I read through the eyes of strangers.

RE: What stories from your own family ...

My family came from Hungary around the turn of the century but unfortunately no one recorded their story. I imagine it was interesting; I know one of my grandmother's siblings died of typhus on the journey over, and I know my grandfathers left home and arrived here with a half brother (and no parents) when he was in his teens. I wish I knew more about their lives but sadly, it's too late.

I think it's really important for people to pass their stories on to the next generation (and in writing, since the young never really care or listen, and likely won't remember by the time they're adults). I feel like knowing the hardships our elders endured helps us develop empathy for others and to have gratitude for what we have.

RE: What stories from your own family ...

We need to share more of our personal family stories so that it is understood what has happened in our lifetime. A hundred years from now, people will want to know how their family survived a pandemic and if any family members were victims. The only history we may have now are family letters and journals. I wish I knew more about my families participation in wars. These stories don't have to be of great valor or historical significance, just day-to-day mundane events tell so much.
