Jayant Kaikini Biography

Jayant Kaikini, born in India in 1955. He was awarded a Masters in Biochemistry from Karnataka University, Dharwad, after which he moved to Mumbai where he worked as a chemist for many years.

Kaikini is a Kannada (poet), short-story writer, columnist and playwright, as well as an award-winning lyricist, script and dialogue writer for Kannada films. He won his first Karnataka Sahitya Akademi award at the age of nineteen in 1974, and has since won the award three times, in addition to winning various other awards in India, including the first Kusumagraj Rashtriya Bhasha Sahitya Puraskar. No Presents Please, his volume of selected stories, is the first book in translation to have won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.

He now lives in Bangalore with his wife Smita and two children. Apart from Kannada, Jayanth is fluent in Konkani (his mother tongue), Marathi, Hindi and English.

Translator Tejaswini Niranjana is Professor of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University and author of Mobilizing India: Women, Music, and Migration between India and Trinidad, published by Duke University Press, and Siting Translation: History, Post-Structuralism, and the Colonial Context.
