But when the time came for him to return to shore, The marlin was left with only a skeleton. Santiago returns to the village exhausted and defeated. which was welcomed with kindness Even though he knew he had already proven his strength and resiliency. The novel explores the topic of struggle. Solitude, perseverance and dignity, emphasizing the universal struggle between man and nature.
