by Dennis Henn
At the age of five, Prince Winks watched helplessly as his mother left her home and family for the final time.
He stood at the screen door helpless and cried. The young boy believed she was abducted by a crab. As he grew older, he believed that he was responsible for her absence, even after he discovered she died of cancer. Prince's father, the Gogre, also struggled with his wife's absence. He felt like a failure because he could not save her. As a result, he more or less abandoned the family. He and Prince lost their ways.
But Prince was not alone, as he grew to discover. People, along with a mysterious squirrel, entered his life to point him in a right direction. The Albino Squirrel "adjusted the glasses on her nose to bring them closer to her eyes. She then asked, "Where have you come from? Where are you going? Because an oak grows deep roots it can also grow branches high and broad. You must grow roots before you can grow branches. You must know who you are before you can stretch out branches to gather light from the sun. Otherwise the forest's darkness will engulf you."
How will Prince discover the way out of his lostness? Will he choose safety over risk? After feeling abandoned by his mother and father, will he trust anyone to be part of his life? Where does the good way lie?
