About this book

Book Summary

In this sequel to McMahon's electrifying series debut, Head Cases, Gardner Camden and the PAR team return to investigate potentially connected cases.

FBI Agent Gardner Camden is an analytical genius with an affinity for puzzles. He and his squad of brilliant yet quirky agents make up the Patterns and Recognition (PAR) unit, the FBI's hidden edge, brought in for cases that no one else can solve.

PAR's latest case involves a militia group stockpiling weapons. When their confidential informant in the case is killed, it quickly becomes clear that the militia did not kill him.

As the squad looks into the evidence surrounding his murder, an unidentified man is caught on camera with their informant. This mystery man's picture is connected to another case at the FBI, an unsolved series of murdered women, buried in the ground in north Florida. Could they have uncovered a serial killer? And if so, what is his connection to their C.I.?

As PAR juggles an investigation into both the dead women and the militia, they enroll a new informant, only to find the case escalating in dangerous ways. How will PAR handle a case that increasingly looks like a terrorist plot? And in the serial case, with no puzzles or witnesses, and few leads, how will a group set up to decode riddles be successful?

Media Reviews

"The tale moves briskly on a cushion of rhythmic prose and nearly nonstop banter...A slick and lively thriller featuring a team you'll want to hang with." —Kirkus Reviews

"[D]isappointing...As the pieces click into place, McMahon falls victim to genre clichés—including a few instances of sloppy policing from his supposedly competent leads—that he managed to skirt or subvert in the previous novel. The result is a ho-hum mystery that fails to distinguish itself from the pack." —Publishers Weekly

Another winning police procedural
I thought Head Cases was a very good police procedural book/ thriller but I think this one is even better. I listened to this which was phenomenally narrated and was blown away.

Gardner Cameron and is Patterns and Recognitions (PAR) team return to solve two interconnected crimes: gun running and a serial murderer. The connection between the two as in Head Cases is cleverly done and the pace of the book picks up at this point. Since PAR is dedicated to unraveling puzzles created by crimes, it’s the inclusion in the story line adds depth and complexity to this thriller. I am terrible at puzzles, so I’m a geek at watching others do them!

Cameron Gardner is a great character. Neurodivergent, his quirky personality helps him look past the grizzle and horror of the crimes he deals with, acting as a great foil to others on his team - all of whom have unique skill set. He’s also a loving dad and that part of the book helps balance some of the tension in the crime solving.

While a bit slow in the beginning, the pace picks up and then it’s an exciting ride to the end. I love this series and look forward to the next installment.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this great and marvelously narrated thriller. Highly recommend.

A strong procedural
Inside Man is the second in the Head Cases series. The “Head Cases” group of the FBI is actually known as The Patterns and Recognition (PAR) Unit. This time, they’re investigating a militia group in Florida. When their CI is killed, it’s quickly apparent the group was not responsible. This leads to a separate investigation, involving a potential serial killer. I was quickly drawn in and the dual plot lines kept up the pace and tension.
McMahon has written a well crafted procedural with a strong group of characters. McMahon allows the main characters to develop as the story goes along. Despite their intelligence, they still make mistakes. As with any good procedural, the dynamics of the team plays an important role in the story.

There are some good twists here and I did not see how it would all play out. It is not necessary to have read the first book in the series, but it’s equally enjoyable and I also recommend it. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

My thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.
