About this book

Book Summary

On glittering Capri, anything can be a mirage. And no one holds a grudge like family.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Cloisters comes an electrifying thriller about an opulent family retreat to Italy that's shattered by the resurfacing of a decades-old crime.

In 1992, Sarah Lingate is found dead below the cliffs of Capri, leaving behind her three-year-old daughter, Helen. Despite suspicions that the old-money Lingates are involved, Sarah's death is ruled an accident. And every year, the family returns to prove it's true. But on the thirtieth anniversary of Sarah's death, the Lingates arrive at the villa to find a surprise waiting for them—the necklace Sarah was wearing the night she died.

Haunted by the specter of that night, the legendary Lingate family unity is pushed to a breaking point, and Helen seizes the opportunity. Enlisting the help of Lorna Moreno, a family assistant, the two plot their escape from Helen's paranoid, insular family. But when Lorna disappears and the investigation into Sarah's death is reopened, Helen has to confront the fact that everyone who was on Capri thirty years ago remains a suspect—her controlling father, Richard; her rarely lucid aunt, Naomi; her distant uncle, Marcus; and their circle of friends, visitors, and staff. Even Lorna, her closest ally, may not be who she seems.

As long-hidden secrets about that night boil to surface, one thing becomes clear: Not everyone will leave the island alive.

Media Reviews

"[A] powerful, surprise-packed study of family, wealth, and consequences...Hays uses the island setting to brilliantly exploit locked-room mystery tropes, and doles out jaw-dropping reveals at just the right moments. This masterful suspense story has all the momentum of a runaway train." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A ride as exhilarating as the ferries that transport the elites from villa to yacht. Sleuthing minds will cavort with acrobatic prowess, reeling from one unexpected twist to another...Hitchcockian in its film-noirish malevolence, Hays' second novel also deviously channels Patricia Highsmith's cunningly and sympathetically flawed characters to deliver an absorbing read." —Booklist (starred review)

"These strong, conniving women drive the drama and the narrative, and they are captivating enough that as twist after twist begins to unfurl, the novel still feels character-driven. The end—well, the end shocks. And it's well earned. By the time the sun sets on the gorgeous excess and rugged coast of Capri, lives will have been destroyed. A feisty storm of Greek tragedy headlined by three very modern women." —Kirkus Reviews

"The tension in this atmospheric novel builds like a drumbeat as Hays explores the secrets that lie within a privileged family and keeps readers guessing from one twist to the next. For fans of Lucy Foley and Lucinda Berry." —Library Journal

"Old money, high drama, and dark secrets—what's not to love? This is a riveting, atmospheric, elegantly written, and twist-packed tale...Brilliant!" —Ellery Lloyd, New York Times bestselling author of The Club

"Engrossing and sinister, Katy Hays's second book, Saltwater, has all the elements thriller readers love: dead bodies, deception, and betrayal. But at its core, this multilayered story delves into the concepts of familial loyalty and generational trauma, making Saltwater a must-read for 2025." —Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight

"Saltwater is a masterful, riveting, and unsettling tale of privilege, greed, and lust. The Lingates are masters at protecting their own interests, until their polished veneer begins to tarnish on the beautiful but vicious island of Capri. I can't remember reading a book with as many deftly executed twists and revelations as Saltwater—I devoured it in what felt like seconds." —Ella Berman, author of Reese's Book Club pick Before We Were Innocent

Ooooo…this is good.

What is the Lingate family hiding?

Why do they come back to Capri every year?

The family goes back to make sure nothing new has been found out about Sarah's death.

Did someone kill Helen's mother, Sarah Lingate, or did she have an accident?

Helen lost her mother on the family's vacation in Capri when she was very young, and it has always been recorded as an accident, but was it?

Helen was always kept under strict guard as she grew because the family was afraid she would say something about the incident.

As they do every year, the family is back in Capri and have their assistant Lorna with them.

She and Helen had become friends, and Lorna knew all about how Helen grew up.

What is going to happen this time?

Will Lorna be under scrutiny and close watch now that she is with them? Will she be safe? She isn’t family, but does it matter?

What about the necklace Sarah wore? How could it have been found after thirty years?

And...who sent the necklace to the family at their villa?

What does all this mean?

Find out in this book that details Capri perfectly and makes you want to go there or go back.

And...find out about the secrets and lies kept by this wealthy family.

You won’t want to stop reading - and just wait for the twists. 5/5

Hidden Secrets
SALTWATER by Katy Hays

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC ebook

In 1992 the wealthy Lingate family is vacationing in beautiful Capri, when playwright, Sarah Lingate, is found dead below the cliffs. Sarah leaves behind a three-year-old daughter, Helen. Many believe the Lingate family is responsible even though her death is ruled accidental. The Lingate’s continue to vacation every year in Capri and on the thirtieth anniversary of Sara’s death in Capri, Helen, who is now thirty, along with the family assistant, Lorna, hatch a plan for Helen to escape her controlling family. A necklace that Sarah was wearing the night she died, suddenly appears at the manor where all are staying. Things quickly go sideways when Lorna disappears…
What is happening? Who is Lorna really? Where is Lorna? What really happened to Sarah all these years ago? So many questions, so many secrets.

I enjoyed this sophomore book by Katy Hays, as well as, her first book, The Cloisters. I liked the writing style and all the secrets each character harbors. The story was compelling and I enjoyed the twists throughout. I look forward to what Katy Hays does next. Saltwater will be available to read on March 25, 2025.

lots of characters with high entertainment value
While I found it a bit rough to start - lots of POV and timeframes to adjust to at the start - I did end up really enjoying the entertainment value it offered!

Lorna has joined a very rich family on a vacation. She's gone from friends with the daughter to the uncle's assistant. But the family is not an ordinary family. They go back to this same island, year after year, to try to prove to everyone that years ago - when the wife of one of the brothers fell to her death - that the family had nothing to do with it.

But this trip is different. Helen, the daughter, and Lorna, the assistant - they have some surprises for the family. I found the beginning to be a bit slow as you are introduced to many POV and the two timelines. I did appreciate the little bits of articles and information and I loved when they shed new light on the story and not just a re-telling of what we already knew.

I did find the twists in the end to be entertaining even if I struggled to find them believable. Sometimes the fun is in the sheer shock and awe - the twists were fun and the ending had a great pace and conclusion.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
