About this book

Book Summary

This masterful novel of psychological suspense from the New York Times bestselling author of The Art Forger follows a cast of unforgettable characters whose lives intersect when a harrowing accident occurs at the Metropolis Storage Warehouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

But was it really an accident? Was it suicide? A murder? Six mysterious characters, who rent units in, or are connected to, the self-storage facility, must now reevaluate their lives. We meet Serge, an unstable but brilliant street photographer who lives in his unit, which overflows with thousands of undeveloped pictures; Zach, the building's owner, who develops Serge's photos as he searches for clues to the accident; Marta, an undocumented immigrant who is finishing her dissertation and hiding from ICE; Liddy, an abused wife and mother, who recreates her children's bedroom in her unit; Jason, who has left his corporate firm and now practices law from his storage unit; and Rose, the office manager, who takes kickbacks to let renters live in the building and has her own complicated family history.

The characters have a variety of backgrounds: they are different races; they practice different religions; they're young and they're not so young; they are rich, poor, and somewhere in the middle. As they dip in and out of one another's lives, fight circumstances that are within and also beyond their control, and try to discover the details of the accident, Shapiro both dismantles the myth of the American dream and builds tension to an exciting climax.

For readers of Janelle Brown, Lucy Foley, Megan Abbott, and Laura Lipmann, Metropolis is an original, spellbinding, and moving story of what we hang on to, what we might need to let go, and how unexpected events can lead us to discover our truest selves.

Media Reviews

"An ingeniously plotted hybrid social/suspense novel ... [Shapiro] takes her time loading the bases, and in the last inning, she hits it out of the park." - Shelf Awareness

"Metropolis has all the elements I love in a novel: fascinating characters, a pace that crackles with tension, and a deeper message that will resonate with everyone. Once again, B. A. Shapiro weaves a unique and riveting tale." - Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of I Know a Secret

"A rich and gripping journey through intersecting lives, a nuanced exploration of characters who share nothing in common—but almost everything too. Inventive and immersive, it's a page-turner of novel that will also make you want to slow down and soak it all in." - Lou Berney, Edgar Award-winning author of November Road

"In Metropolis, Shapiro is the literary equivalent of a master juggler, writing with tremendous compassion and a wonderful knack for storytelling. Her characters whirl together within the confines of a self-storage unit and, though at its core is a mystery, its beating heart is their stories. It is a dazzling performance and a novel that will stay with me for a long time to come." - Mary Morris, author of Gateway to the Moon

"The tepid latest art-tangential mystery from Shapiro (The Collector's Apprentice) revolves around the tenants of a Boston-area storage space... This lacks the frisson of the author's earlier books." - Publishers Weekly

Metropolis is unique
This book is an amazing novel. The story tells us about very different individuals who live and work in an old warehouse. The book is filled with suspense, from the being to the end. The plot is very original and is 100% a great read. Would recommend worth a read

an unputdownable read
A diverse group of characters, some living in a storage unit- an "accident", a surprise (yet not surprising) twist all made for an unputdownable story.

Snapshots of Life Struggles
B.A. Shapiro has crafted a clever story of lives that have converged because of a storage facility in Cambridge, MA. We have good lawyers and bad, an artist, immigration and domestic violence trauma, people trying to make the best of their lives and protect their family and a sinister plot to harm everyone in its path. Had a bit in common with the Paris Apartment which I read at the same time and was equally compelling. I recommend this one.

Metropolis
Metropolis is a funky storage warehouse in Boston. Doesn't sound interesting? Well, I loved this book and I read a lot. The story line drew me in as did the characters. Some were major characters, some not. And quite the characters they were, mostly quirky; some seemed "normal". (But in the end "gotcha"). I loved the way the author developed her characters and told their stories. Detail development will draw you in, too.
This book is the best of the year so far for me. I highly recommend the book, including for book clubs. It will be a great topic for discussion.

A Must Read
I seldom fall in love with a book that is almost totally character driven, but "Metropololis" is the exception. Six main characters, six problematic lives, all becoming intertwined in a Boston storage unit makes for fascinating reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Why am I just finding B A Shapiro?
I'm so grateful to have been introduced to Shapiro through Bookbrowse. I love a story that weaves in backstories and intertwines people who seemingly would not find their paths crossing but find their lives intersecting based on an event and circumstance. Shapiro certainly doesn't disappoint in doing just that.
Does this book have mystery and suspense? Yep! Does it have human experience and diversity? Also yes!
I will definitely be reading other books by this author.
