RE: Do you agree with Arthur's take...
I agree with both assessments of Sally and Eve. They are not running away, but creating space to evaluate options and possibilities. Life can throw opportunities in your path, but it can be a choice whether to accept the responsibility to engage a task or walk away.

RE: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of structure. How important are boundaries or lack thereof in your own life?
I believe daily routines is essential in life and beneficial — to a point. Routines helps me to work more efficiently and have greater control over my life. But planning out every moment of every day is overdoing it, in my opinion. There's a risk of boredom and monotony.

RE: Overall, what do you think of The Narrowboat Summer (please, no spoilers in this thread)
I agree with katherinep, I enjoyed the pace of the novel. It makes a nice respite from stories that propel the reader forward by racheting up suspense (don't get me wrong, I like those stories too!) and it suited the gentle yet surprising storyline.

RE: Do you see the appeal of the narrowboat lifestyle? Could you imagine yourself doing what they did?
It sounds fascinating for a short trip and with somebody else to do the work. It was definitely interesting to read about.

RE: Sally enjoys cooking because is makes her feel "empowered and in control." Is there any activity you pursue for these reasons?
I like to have a routine and that sometimes means you have to be in control! I'm not sure that is cooking for me, but you do have to take control in deciding what to cook and how to cook the meal. Like leslieh, I'm a reader too, and I do like to be in control of my reading choices!

RE: Were you previously aware of the narrowboat lifestyle? Would it interest you?
I think those of us who think this would be great should get together and go--wishful thinking but nice to dream about
