I loved this book. It is q quiet gem. Written in a poetic,simple style it's message crosses continents and oceans. It may take place in Nigeria; but, it deals with life issues we all face.
I did not find it confusing or hard to get into as previous reviewers mentioned. The use of each character's distinctive voice to tell the story gave insight into their motivations and ultimate actions.
This story has universal appeal and should spark many lively discussions in books clubs.

With a light hand the author has created characters who will make you laugh, and others, who will make you cry. Parkin gives an insight into the everyday lives of people in Africa and their ability to survive in face of Aids and recent genocide. Not a depressing book but rather a novel of celebration of humanity and the living. It is a wonderful bookclub novel as it raises so many issues of particular interest to women.

History buffs rejoice! Tom Standage has written an erudite and entertaining view of world history through the lense of food choices and agriculture.
He interspaces the tale of history with thoroughly understandable explanations of plant adaptation, sociology and military tactics. Standage is a wonderful storyteller who makes history come alive in a clear and concise writing style. Fans of Mark Kurlansky will definitely enjoy this book.
Skeletons at the Feast

I have enjoyed 2 previous novels of Chris Bohjalian. He is an accomplished author. Disappointing best describes his new novel. Although the historical details of wartime 1945 Germany are interesting, the action is awkward and slow in this novel. Characters are one-dimensional and fail to evoke interest or emotion.There are so many better pieces of fiction and non-fiction that cover this material,don't waste your time on this one.
