Salvation of a Saint
by Keigo Higashino
Salvation of a Saint (10/10/2012)
I found this to be an unique mystery in that the focus isn't so much on "who" but rather "how." I enjoyed the interaction of the characters investigating the crime. This was my first time reading a book written by a Japanese author and I enjoyed the setting and style.
The Good Father: A Novel
by Noah Hawley
The Good Father (12/14/2011)
I feel emotionally attached to this, having lived through the horrific assassination of President John F. Kennedy as a young adult. I loved exploring the psychological trauma experienced by Dr. Paul Allen, The Good Father. This book seeped into my soul and will stay with me for years to come.
Defending Jacob: A Novel
by William Landay
Defending Jacob by William Landry (10/12/2011)
I was thrilled to receive this book as an advanced reader's copy mainly because of the book description. I simply was unable to put it down. A taut legal thriller about a district attorney and his journey to defend his 14-year-old son who is accused of the murder of a classmate, there are many twists and turns and the ending completely stunned me. I can't wait to read William Landry's earlier books and will look forward to his next.
Next to Love
by Ellen Feldman
Next to Love (7/5/2011)
Next to Love is an impressive and powerful story of three best friends and the men they love set during World War II. It focuses on their lives as they live through the war and beyond. I loved watching the women face the challenges and events of their lives as the book moves from saying goodbye to their men and transitioning through the intervening years as their children are about to start their own adult lives. I enjoyed watching them deal with their trials and tribulations and seeing how their lives and friendships evolved. As a baby boomer I loved reading about this time in history.
The Things We Cherished: A Novel
by Pam Jenoff
The Things We Cherished (5/25/2011)
This was a marvelous story spanning many years and locations. It is the story of two attorneys who while working to defend a man against charges of war crimes during the Holocaust find themselves falling in love. The accused is the brother of a man who was deemed a hero during the time. It's the story of their mutual love for the same woman and the significance of an anniversary clock. The book is part love story, mystery and historical fiction.
