I found this book engaging from the start and only more so as we are given glimpses into the psychiatrist's own character. The twists of plot and character behavior were well placed and surprising but believable in retrospect. Nothing was given away in for shadowing so the surprises kept their edge. I would recommend this book for mature readers and book clubs as the characters are well drawn and could provide much for discussion.

This was a page turning fiasco of disfunction. A family crisis brings the simmering issues into dramatic relief as the characters bring their own spin to the situation, well, several situations really. Each has his or her own view of what is happening based on what they know of the others which, of course, is only partial because no one is opening up to the vulnerability of being completely open and honest.

Poigniant, gentle and real it doesn't hit the reader aside the head with overstated drama, yet remains captivating. The things said are in essence non conversations, and more is said about what's going on by this non communication than the words. In this book, what is not said is what is real. I believe that this book would be an excellent book for book club discussion as it inspires us not only to ask questions about the characters, but questions about ourselves.

I found this book to be story and temperament in the tradition of Dickens which in my view is excellent. The story of animal loving seafaring young men is a winner. There is enough fantasy mixed with grueling reality and exotic animals to remind one of the original fairy tales of Grimm............engaging and sometimes gruesome this book hold interest until the end. I would recomend it to readers age 12 and up and believe that it would make a good discussion piece for young adults.

This book was, in a word, gratifying. Based on the experiences and insights of one man from boyhood through adulthood and his experiences the book brings both laughter and tears. Touchingly human the stories of relationships with pets and those who love them are endearing. It is enjoyable reading for anyone who enjoys a well turned phrase. The sentimental will love it but those who crave suspense will find it a bit sanguine.

Well researched and downright fun describes "The Discovery of Jeanne Baret". The book is a treat for anyone interested in plants and animals as we circumvent the globe with this indomitable heroine and company. A stowaway posing as a young male on the ship she suffers hardships and perils described by the author in sometimes agonizing detail..................such was her devotion to discovering new plant life. This is realism and history shown through a personal story at its best.
