The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper
by Phaedra Patrick
The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper SINGS (3/19/2016)
I must start by saying, I LOVE THIS BOOK and will be looking for another one from this author. The characters were so well described that I felt like I knew them - some of Arthur's changes surprised me but made me happy for him. Definitely not a book to put down and forget about - it kept calling me to read a few more pages, read a few more pages. Phaedra Patrick (in my opinion) has a wonderful career ahead of her and I will be watching for her name on another book! This book made me happy - I am the same age as Arthur and sometimes have the same feelings about the past so I enjoyed seeing how his life came together. Wonderful!

The introduction of three separate groups of characters throughout the book made me keep reading. I just knew there HAD to be some connection. Each character was unhappy being who they were and wanted to be someone else or have a different life. Each had his/her own idea of how to accomplish this. One searched endlessly for his twin brother, another sought wealth by attaching to a school teacher and running away and one sought to spend time with his biological father. The book gives a good story for each group. However, I still believe there was a definite connection that I missed. I know each was not who they seemed to be and all wanted to be something else. Did they succeed? You'll have to read to know. Generally, I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone!
While My Sister Sleeps
by Barbara Delinsky
This Book is a Winner! (12/8/2008)
I was drawn into the lives of the Snow family from page one. The storyline was fascinating - but, it was the character of Molly which kept me fascinated. She loved her family - including her sister, Robin who was an Olympic-level runner. However, Molly's self-doubts were all based on the idea that she was second best in the eyes of her mother. Throughout the book we meet other characters who let us know exactly how wrong Molly was about being second best. Right up to the final page, this book made me happy and content to continue reading about this family. It was "comfort" food to me. I had never read anything by Barbara Delinsky before but I certainly will now. I highly recommend this compelling and emotion-filled book to anyone!!!

As a "baby boomer" I have always been told about World War II and the heroism of the Allied troops. Naturally I believed everything I was told since it's a matter of history. This new book has made me think a little harder about what I have always believed. What if the Germans had won? The book is a refreshing change and plants a lot of new ideas in my head. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
