Our Lady of the Prairie
by Thisbe Nissen
Our Lady of the Prairie (12/12/2017)
Very difficult to get through. I did not like this character, did not feel empathy for her. It seems this author chose to write about an area of America she does not really like. It was a waste of time. Being a Midwesterner, I was offended.
Love and Other Consolation Prizes: A Novel
by Jamie Ford
Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford (7/15/2017)
Excellent read, I was excited to get this book to review, and then thought it could never live up to my expectations. Well it did! This is the story of a little Chinese boy who get sent to America and then gets raffled off at the first Seattle Worlds Fair at the turn of the 20th Century. Mr. Ford takes stories he has read from old newspapers and documents and weaves a fantastically beautiful story with shreds of truth running throughout. It is wonderful account of undying love and respect, heartbreak and unimaginable fear. I really enjoyed this book, everyone should do themselves a favor and read this book. Also a great choice for book club discussions.
The Barrowfields
by Phillip Lewis
The Barrowfields by Phillip Lewis (3/10/2017)
This book was interesting and the subject was kind of unusual. The surprise ending, I did not see coming. But it was very hard for me to grasp that the actions of the narrator were believable. His poor sister! I would recommend with some reservations.
Mercies in Disguise: A Story of Hope, a Family's Genetic Destiny, and the Science That Rescued Them
by Gina Kolata
Mercies in Disguise by Gina Kolata (11/16/2016)
I was not sure that I was going to like this book. It started out kind of clinical like a medical research book.

After that part was done it moved into a family with devastating genetic illness. It described how different family members coped with the knowledge once it was discovered.

It was a good book, it kept my attention and I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a sort of medical detective story.

I have not read any other stories like this, nor have I ever heard of the disease GSS.

My prayers to the family!
