The book was a good read that was filled with enough suspense and story line that it kept my attention to the end. I learned some interesting facts both about India and the people of that country.

I enjoyed the relationship between Ranjit and his daughter; I felt that it gave a good understanding of his character, and love of his

Family, which to me, that was the center of the story . He was a good guy who got caught up in a tangle of circumstances. Some he handled better then others .

I had a difficult time accepting the characters as real people. Each seemed to be more stereotypical than original, and often they acted different from expectations of how they felt. It was hard to find sympathy or identify with anyone of them and this took away from the enjoyment of the story. I did find the storyline readable but then again I can find redeeming values in most books. I can recommend the novel but only if you check it out from a library and save your money.

The Caretaker is a political thriller whose main character is Ranjit Singh, a Sikh Captain who had commanded an elite army squad on a glacier on the border between India and Pakistan. The present story takes place on Martha's Vineyard with flashbacks to the mission that costs Ranjit his career in India.The book is fast paced, filled with an interesting look into the Sikh faith, Indian and Pakistani relations, North Korean shenanigans and a love story to keep things interesting. The story ends abruptly but leaves you waiting for books two and three of the planned trilogy. I liked the book and put it on my husband's to read pile.

A very good read, with tension, several different cultures, sex and mystery. I know more about Sikh's now, and what's under their turbans, and why. I also understand more about Pakistan and India and their towering mountains and all that snow and conflict. I had always visualized, mistakenly, sweltering heat..

I really enjoyed this story. It had a lot of twists and turns which kept the reader guessing at the solution. It is a love story, a mystery and a thriller. The ending was disappointing. I felt like the author was not sure how to end his tale so he simply stopped writing.

The Caretaker by A.X. Ahmad was a fast-paced novel that was an easy read. The unexpected twists and turns provided enough suspense and intrigue to keep me interested, but at times it was a little difficult to understand the direction of the story. Ranjit Singh's flashback experiences as an Indian army captain gave a better understanding of his personality and some of his actions and decisions, but I yearned for more character development of his and the Senator's families. A few of the events and coincidences were a bit implausible, but did not detract from the overall premise of the story. I enjoyed the book, but because of its need for more details and explanation in some areas, I would be selective as to whom I would recommend it.

This was an interesting book, fast moving, interesting cultural issues, good character development until about 75 into the story.

As Rajit started getting deeper into trouble I had a feeling it was not going to end well. Many disconnected twists and a very short disappointing ending. Too bad as I was hoping for more.

Interesting book. It reminded me of a Norman Mailer screenplay in Provincetown. I found the military flashbacks a little jarring and the plot was fairly formulaic. The best part for me was the cultural dynamics between the locals between Ranjit as well as the Senator and even in Ranjit's family.....
