....a fanciful imagination...
The Tudor Secret is a swashbuckling story embroidered superficially on the rich tapestry of England after the reign of Henry VIII. My personal feeling is that this period of history needs no such embellishment. For those who enjoy a fast-paced hypothetical romp thru English history, this book is just the ticket.

The Tudor Secret - History & Mystery
I have not read very much in the historical fiction genre, at least not in this time period. That said, I found that I was engrossed in the story right from the start. While not a fabulously written book, it is fun, fast paced and a really good read.

The Tudor Secret
Interesting point of view -- a young male servant -- and good feel for the times in the pacing and language, but a little unbelievable that a young servant would so quickly become enmeshed in intrigue, particularly when the young Princess Elizabeth knows so very well that her life is at stake.

Not His Best
The premise of the book - behind the scenes Tudor England between Henry VIII and Elizabeth I - is very promising and the book is well written. However I found it off putting that the main character - a squire - would be introduced to so many luminaries and become part of their plots in just a few hours (literally). Perhaps this will be less jarring as the series continues.
I do recommend Gortner's other books, particularly The Last Queen.

Secrets to Tell
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The style of writing was easy to follow, the characters interesting, the twists & turns of the plot kept my attention. The book is a mix of history & fiction & I appreciated the author's clarification of this at the end of the story. I'm not normally a fan of this time period, but really enjoyed the story. I would read another book by this author in the future. I'll certainly share my copy with friends along with my positive recommendation.

English History Revisited
Very good interpretation of English history. Exciting and mysterious times back then. Makes you want to read any other books C. W. Gortner writes. Great read for historical history buffs.

Good historical fiction of the post-Henry VIII era
As a reader who enjoyed many of Phillipa Gregory's books, this novel did not disappoint. It succeeded in capturing my interest from the first chapter, then led through a series of escapades after the death of King Henry's son, Edward. If you enjoy Gregory's books, I think you will enjoy this one,

Fast-paced and readable
This book moves right along. The plot has lots of twists and close escapes--maybe too many--but the historical details are interesting and skillfully woven in. The treatment of the relationship between Elizabeth and Robert Dudley is not the one given in those films with Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirrin, and Cate Blanchette, but it's actually quite believable and fully in keeping with the complex intrigues of the Tudor Court that the author so readily exploits.
