One of those rare books where the author actually captures what it’s like during a time. When reading the book, it’s obvious the author is reflecting on her own life during that time period and creating an authentic experience for the reader. So many period novels look back from today’s cultural lens and they just don’t reflect real interactions or dialogue. This book puts the reader in the main character’s shoes. And while not all the experiences are pleasant and not all the choices are smart ones, at least they make sense given the context and the environment. For a the length of the book, the reader gets to inhabit another life from a not too distant past.
