The multi-talented Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) is regarded as one of the most important avant-garde film directors of the 20th century, but Cocteau considered himself primarily a poet and saw all his work as poetry. Cocteau was also a novelist, dramatist, designer, playwright, artist and, for a time, boxing manager (for his friend Panama Al Brown).
An open homosexual, his friends included Pablo Picasso, Jean Hugo, Jean Marais, Henri Bernstein, Marlene Dietrich, Coco Chanel, Erik Satie and Édith Piaf.
