Nehru was born in 1889 in Allahabad in North East India. He studied in Cambridge England and then became a lawyer serving in the Allahabad High Court. He joined the Indian Congress Committee in 1918 and was imprisoned by the British on a number of occasions. He became India's first prime minister following its independence from Britain in 1947, and remained in the position until his death in 1964.
