I may not have initially trusted Ned, but would have kept my ears open to learn more, without coming right out and asking.

I see no reason not to trust Ned. Both both sisters should have thought about Veronique ‘s health before they decided to try to escape. Ned and his family had to go on ahead since Veronique was slowing them down.

I would have been desperate enough to go with anyone I thought would help me. Anything was better than staying.

They had no choice but to trust Ned if they wished to escape. Their timing was wrong with Veronique's
illness.

I would have cautiously trusted Ned.

In that day and age you could barely trust your own relatives, so no I would not have trusted Ned. That is why so many did not attempt to run or use the Underground Railroad. Most slaves knew about it, but never thought that they were capable or even worthy of being free, let alone take a chance to be lead by another. Being free came with it's own set of problems and unknown fears, at least where they were they knew the rules and what was expected of them. It took a very strong brave person to attempt to flee, even though they wanted to be free.
