Pavla finds the wolfpack, Markus finds Danilo. How do you think the surrogate families these characters create compare to those they've been born into?

The characters original families abandon them. Pavla finds the most acceptance and love in the wolf pack. Unfortunately, the wolf pack is destroyed. Markus and Danilo both fulfill the need for a surrogate family in their relationship with each other. I think they come out the best in the story.

Danilo's parents were horrible, rejecting him because his twin had died one would think they would be loving him more then ever. Turning him over to Smetanka who treated him badly. It was a blessing for him to find Markus to care for. Markus certainly needed him, since the wolf pack was killed and he had to run off on his own to save his life.
Pavla as a wolf was accepted and happy so I do believe the surrogate families are much better then the families Pavla and Danilo were born into.

The surrogate families were much better that their blood families because they accept them as they are, not for what they want them to be.

The three main characters , Pavla, Danilo and Markus all came from difficult places in their birth families and all were looking for something better and to be loved for who they were. This is pretty normal for many with difficult childhoods and it was heart warming to see the good things that they eventually achieved though in each case it was a rough road and has left them always questioning if it would last.

The surrogate families seem to be the opposite of the characters' families. The surrogates compliment the personalities of the characters' families instead of being more like them.

I agree with what others have said: unlike their birth families, Danilo's and Pavla's surrogate families totally accepted them as they were. This ties into the theme of love throughout the novel: love is a choice we make. It's not dependent upon birth or romantic relationships (Danilo's and Pavla's is undeclared and unfulfilled, but it is still real to each of them). We can create families of our own choosing based on love in one form or another (including the mutual good will that Danilo, Markus and Boris bring to their domestic arrangement, or Ivan's befriending of the wounded Pavla). In those relationships, the characters acted out of a disposition to love, without qualifications.

Pavla, Markus and Danilo were all rejected by their natural families. The were each able to find acceptance in new surrogate families. Pavla the wolves and Markus and Danilo each other.
