Miranda's father is editing a dissertation that contains parables, which he says prove that 'life and time are not in sync.' In what way, do you think, is each character's story a parable about how time and life are not in sync?

As far as Miranda and Samuel their age difference is not in sync. Samuel wondered where he was and what he was doing as Miranda was a child.

As far as Elio and Oliver their first encounter was 'time' right - they could not be a couple and in the open, even in Italy. It took them growing into middle age to be able to bring their romance public and that was at a second time or chance for their love to continue.

The characters all referred to living a dead life until they met the other person in their relationship. In the case of Oliver and Elio, their first time together wasn't in sync for who they felt they needed to be. But while apart for twenty years, they each knew the other was out there living a life that was not complete.

I always end up thinking about the choices someone makes regarding the topic of what was is/was/might have been. Sometimes decisions are made that don't seem hard or easy, but in the end have broad impacts. Does that mean time and life are out of sync? Each character made decisions that may have caused time and life to be out of sync, but that's what choices offer and how lessons are learned.
