There was a movie on Hulu / Disney+ called "Rosaline" and I loved it. It was similar in that it was a Romeo and Juliet adjacent retelling from Rosaline's point of view but there was a lot of modern music and modern phrasing. I thought it was hilarious and very entertaining!

Great question, Rebecca! Thanks for the info on "Rosaline." I hadn't heard of it and I definitely want to check it out. The only other retelling I can think of is West Side Story.

Kimk - Did you see the new version of West Side Story they did on Disney+?
And another one I just thought of - definitely a kids movie but Gnomeo and Juliet. Was cute and lots of fun Elton John music in the soundtrack!

I meant to catch that version when it was in the theaters but missed it (I don't have Disney+). I heard it was really well done though! Also never heard of Gnomeo & Juliet (obviously there aren't any kids in my life, and my cats haven't expressed an interest).

RE: Are there other Romeo and Juliet ...

I robbed myself of reading Shakespeare’s version when I bs’ed my way through the assignment in high school. Because I was never invested in the meaning of the original, I really haven’t been interested in other versions. This is one reason I appreciate BookBrowse so much-I’m exposed to books that I wouldn’t necessarily pick otherwise. I’ve done a lot of research on Romeo and Juliet while reading Rosaline, especially because I didn’t even know she was an actual character in the original! I think I will definitely go back and take another look at Shakespeare’s version to compare and contrast with Solomons’.

RE: Are there other Romeo and Juliet ...

Literature abounds with stories of older men and young inexperienced innocent women, it is the normal, especially where the man is wealthy and worldly. " Rosaline" has implied a more sinister motivation. When I read the book through some while ago I was glad to think about other alternatives. Now that the current times ,war breaking out on two fronts and so much hatred and violence, I am somewhat numb and reluctant to change even romantic classic stories into dark tales of sexual perversion. I am asking myself why I seem hesitant to enter in more wholeheartedly with the discussion of this book. It is well written and different but definitely on the dark side. Valerie
