I don't know anything about the present state of the Australian aborigines, but I would not be surprised if it were like that of the Native Americans...degraded and not yet equal.

I feel racism is still an issue in the United States but I hope in light of the recent events there is more awareness and more acceptance. It certainly is long over due.

The obvious one, of course, is the plight of indigenous people all over the world who are mistreated and marginalized by the more powerful and influential. Mathinna is taken from her family, and treated like a pet by the Franklins, but is abandoned when she is no longer useful or amusing to them.

Indigenous people are still being mistreated; women in many parts of the world are still treated like possessions rather than equals; people are still being imprisoned for things that aren't really crimes ... unfortunately lots of connections.

On the positive side, we do have the ability, like the female convicts in Australia, to change the direction of our lives. There is much inequality in the US, but if you are truly looking to improve your life, it is very possible.

The connections are the poor still being on the very bottom in everything: justice, opportunities, education. Hopefully, there are more opportunities for them to break away.
I have watched several Australian TV shows where the prejudices against the Aboriginies are in full form. Just as Gloria said, still "lots of connections..."

As an American, I can say that the fate of the indigenous people of Australia is still prevalent today not only in Australia but here is America as well. The treatment of American toward the Native American Indians is a stain on its history. Indians were pillaged stripped and driven off their lands and today is still fighting for a place to call home - absolutely no difference to what the Aborigines experienced in the 19th
Century under British rule.

I don't know much about the Aborigines; however after reading this, I am quite intrigued to do some further research. I imagine their stories are similar to those of Native Americans and African slaves. With that being said, today they probably suffer from the same injustices as Native Americans and African Americans: racism, poverty, poor education, economic strain, poor health care, etc.

I think we still have the same problems, maybe not to the extent of the 1840's, Australia, but definitely we are NOT all treated equally.
