Do you ever listen to music to feel connected to another time? To what times and places does music carry you back?

When Thomas and David play for refugee audiences, they realize their music provides a powerful and poignant memory of the past that has been left behind forever. Thomas thinks, "This is what they want from music, a feeling, a connection to another time" (214). Do you ever listen to music to feel connected to another time? To what times and places does music carry you back?

Like Thomas, music gives me ".....a feeling, a connection to another time". Some patriotic songs such as "Over There" created a spirit of camaraderie among fellow soldiers as well as bonding the families left behind. I picture the soldiers spending down time in a cafe or dance hall singing songs representing their homeland and perhaps listening to the jazz music of the time as well. Listening to bluegrass music creates a feeling of simpler times. A feeling of relaxing on the back porch with family and friends. A picture of the "ol' swimming hole and driving a pickup truck through rain puddles. What good times!

Big Band ers

a sister 7 years older allowed me to grow up with the great Big Band music from the 40s. I listen to those still and remember my childhood years. Music is a necessity in my life.

Yes, I feel music holds precious memories. When I hear an old song, I remember the times and the people from the past times I had heard it.

Music, more than any other venue, can bring us back to the time we first heard a song. It never changes. We love us some fun, ageless tunes.

Yes, nothing better than a cool crisp day, sun shinning, driving and listening to the songs of the 1960's and '70's. If I stay with it I am transported back to high school and college. Feel so lucky for the great times and the magic of music to take me back.

Yes, I like a variety of music and my husband plays music ranging from classical to ragtime (happy music) to songs and instrumentals from virtually every decade in the recorded history of music. Listening to "oldies", music heard from childhood, high school, college and beyond evokes many memories and experiences of specific times and places and the people. I think many people relate to "they're playing our song" whatever the popular tune of the day. For me, the music of the 1960's and 1970's in all its diversity remains favorite.

Yes, listening to music is important to me. I really appreciate authors who are including playlists with their books. I just finished reading "China Dolls" and author Lisa See has the appropriate music on her website.

All of the time! My husband and I still have a turntable and play our old vinyl records every week or two. It reminds us of when we were young, back in the 80's. We also love to reminisce, playing the music of our parents- Nat King Cole, 1960's jazz, Tijuana Brass- those are all fun to listen to.

I think music is a wonderful shorthand into the feeling of a time. I particularly get instantly carried back to past times of my life and can evoke memories, feelings and an overall sense of that time. Any music from Hugh school or college brings me back to the place and time.

Absolutely. I'm part of my high school reunion-planning committee and we play 80's hair band music to keep us amped for the event. Yes, I wrote that out loud. It was music that will always be the soundtrack to our formative years.
