Has there been a fair accounting of this country’s white supremacist past?

Tomlinson Hill pretty much proves that there has not. I learned a lot from this book about which 'powers that be' supported the abolishment of slavery, and, later, civil rights and true equality between blacks and whites, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The farther in time we get from the actual events, the easier it becomes to whitewash it, as evidenced from the many people who really believed that slaves were treated well. Much of the detail revealed in this book is not and was never taught in schools, which is why books like this are so important.

As Sallyh and others above have stated, I don't believe that it has been accounted for. It still goes on, sometimes in the guise of politics (it is both amazing and hateful to me to hear people on supposed news programs or talk shows who still criticize our President because of his skin color) or religion. This book does a lot to inform people of the kinds of things that have gone on, but I'm afraid that the people who most need to hear the story will never pick up the book.

As stated above I do not think there has been, and time is running out as victims and perpetrators die. As with the Holocaust we need to have these stories documented ASAP, and the perpetrators might find peace by confessing before they meet their maker! The crimes committed are a stain on the country's past and only a truthful cleansing will bring any healing.

When you are privileged white I am not sure you are even aware of all the baggage you carry with you. That overt white supremacist activity is in the past but I don't believe we are close to solving the problems of racial differences.
