Many of the characters in the book show a sense of humor in response to the hard times and terrible events they endure, like when Natan makes Sara laugh by saying that they should paint “Jews Here” on the roof of their apartment building so the British don’t bomb them. What role do you think humor plays in the characters’ mental and emotional survival? What do you think it adds to the story?

I didn't see much humor in the book. Certainly nothing sticks out in my mind. I guess there were times of levity, especially early in the book when they had the gatherings at the American Embassy with Martha's family. Overall, the book was very dark— as it should be with such terrible events happening.

Gallows humor has always been a way to release stress during dark times. I vaguely remember one part of the story where one of the women made a comment to the men about their gallows humor otherwise the story was dark and serious as it should be.

It was a rather humorless book. I think Natan's comment about painting "Jews Here" on the roof showed his humanness and I have to admit it was rather funny and unexpected.

I shall never forget a piece of advice given to me when I was a young girl. The advice came from someone I had great confidence in, and to this day I have never forgotten what he said: " Never lose your ability to laugh." Even in the worst of times, I have mustered up enough of whatever I needed to laugh or to find some kind of humor to ease the tension. Though in this novel the incidences of the use of humor were small, when humor was used it did help the characters' survive a dire experience or situation, if only for a moment or two.

I didn't see much humor in this book. I do believe that humor can be a stress reliever.

I agree with others that humor is a way to cope with stressful situations, but I had a difficult time thinking of even one humorous instance in this book. Maybe the humor got lost in the horror.

Like others, I cannot remember humor. I did think that the family moments were important to the characters. The walks in the park meant a great deal.

I remember the positive attitudes of the resistance group which kept morale up. Natan's remark was not so memorable.
