No, it did not. I have always studied George Washington and admired him. He was not a perfect man but he was a man for the time and yet would not be king. I will say that I gained a much broader perspective of him when I read the book Never Caught by Erica Armstrong Dunbar and The Return Of George Washington by Edward J. Larson.

I have always admired what he did for this country by stepping up and leading when others would not/could not step up to lead this country. This book gave me a greater appreciation of his moral courage, along with the depth of his tenacity and selflessness even when he knew that the cards appeared stacked against him. It’s one thing to lead a war for a year or two. It’s quite another thing to hang in there with the same level of grit and passion for 8 years.

I admire George Washington more now than before reading Meltzers book. This story(which I was unfamiliar with) is another example of the challenges the General faced during the revolutionary war. With each new challenge, he led to a solution - some solutions were just easier than others and sometimes multiple solution attempts was necessary.

I haven't really read much about Washington - this might actually be the first one - so my knowledge of him was limited to what I learned in school (over 40 years ago!). It definitely humanized him for me, and I suspect I wouldn't have liked the man in real life - too rigid. But he was what the colonists needed, and I admire his willingness to take on such a huge responsibility in spite of knowing he lacked the experience.
