Ironically, Isaac is unemotional when the "bullying" occurs upon others. He doesn't participate per se, but he doesn't stop it either. I believe that Isaac became a bully himself.

I think it made him numb to what bullying is. He felt sorry for himself, but treated others in a bully fashion.

Desensitized him somewhat. Perhaps he practiced only what he knew without really understanding.

I agree with all comments. It was also interesting to me to see the levels of discrimination...Isaac did not feel equal to Yvonne, but he felt better than her family's black servants, for instance.

I agree with all comments also. When Isaac was angry, or felt that he had been cheated he would lash out with bullying himself. I think it was the only way he knew how to manage himself.

The bullying that Isaac received in school was just one expression of the anti-semitism that he experienced and witnessed throughout his life. The sum total of this prejudice was his resolve to rise above his environment, using the mind of a "Clever" and asserting the strength of a lion.
