Did you see parts of yourself reflected back to you in Daughters of Smoke and Fire? Did you relate to one character more than others?

Readers often like to see what they have in common with people in various parts of the world. Did you see parts of yourself reflected back to you in Daughters of Smoke and Fire? What were they? Did you relate to one character more than others? Who were they and what made that character most relatable?

You don’t need to share the experience of family imprisonment or risk to personal safety to resonate with Leila, for example, though some readers may be in that position coming from authoritarian regimes in other parts of the world, older and bygone or still very much in power. You just need to recognize the need for justice, the desire to be treated with dignity, the freedom to express oneself, to have a fair chance at education, to feel safe at home with your family and other aspects of simple humanity that the book alludes to or describes.

The part of myself that believes strongly that women should be equally appreciated, respected, and given opportunities. This is not a new struggle for women; it has been here since biblical days and perpetrated in various ways and extremes.

Joanna was the character I related to the most. Her bravery to defend herself yet tenderness she gave Leila. Her ability to raise a strong daughter in a oppressive society was admirable. “At the risk of seeming ridiculous, a true revolutionary is led by a strong feeling of love.” Che Guevara

I've always enjoyed school and the gathering of knowledge, even when those feelings were not popular with my peers. It's easy to relate to the women characters who are as capable (if not more so...) than their male counterparts to gain a valuable education and desire the same opportunities.

I did not personally relate to any particular character in the book. I did, however, understand and feel deeply for the female characters. The character of Leila was so well developed, you could feel her depression and anxiety at being deprived of basic human rights. Being treated differently by her own family because she was female. I also felt her pain at trying to save her brother and at his loss, having lost my sister.
