Time - particularly the passage of and the idea of freezing a moment - is a recurring theme in this novel. Discuss some of the ways in which the characters are affected by, reflect on, or rage against their lack of control over time. Describe how the relationship that each character has with time varies.

RE: Discuss some of the ways in which the characters are affected by, reflect on, or rage against their lack of control over time.

Florence doesn't have enough time to complete her memoir the way she planned and wants to be alone to write-- she wants uninterrupted time. Emily doesn't have enough time to develop a deeper relationship with Florence and she wants time to slow down. Daniel reflects on the past and seems to be struggling with moving forward so he seems to be living in the past. Janine is present in her circumstances, but with her relationship Lev she wants to create some other time. The author places the main characters in timeframes that involve the other central characters in their lives yet each character remains self-centered in their own space. Very interesting.

Florence knows her time is running out and she is trying to stay focused on her memoir. Daniel can't decide what he's doing with his life. It's like he's waiting for someone to lead him in the right direction. Janine is more in her own fantasy world and Emily just wants to better understand the here and now.
