Throughout the book it's revealed that people are lying to their partners. Why do you think Pak persists in lying to Young, even when it becomes evident that she knows the truth? Why do Matt and Janine continue to deceive each other as well? Were there any lies in the book that were inconsequential? Do you think lying can be justified at times?

“I didn’t lie; I just didn’t tell you.” Ahhh... Now where have I heard that before? Some people view omissions as more than just white lies, but as outright lying, because by omitting information, you’re no longer being transparent. A lack of vulnerability and transparency hamper communication, and destroys the safety that's expected in all close knit relationships – be they friendships or romantic partnerships as seen in this book.

I think Pak was a chronic liar. He also wanted to dominate the female members of his family by expecting them to obey his fantasies and believe his lies. His lies of omission to his wife became a habit. His only redeeming quality was that he lied to protect his daughter Mary. I cheered when Young left him and found her own destiny, as hard as that decision must have been for her. It was a moral redemption after all that had happened.

Matt turned out to be a "dirty old man" - I have no sympathy for him whatsoever.
