"Lead Street, Albuquerque" features the marriage of artist Rex and the young woman, Maria. What did you think of their relationship? Do you think Rex ever intended to take her and the baby to Italy with him, even before he knew she was pregnant?

It was terrible. It felt more typical of that previous period and made me think that surely a young woman would not put up with that in the current time. That man should never have married anyone. Even if he was an artistic genius, he was not a person who could care for others.

I think Maria knew what kind of husband Rex would be before she married him. Since the men knew that marrying and having a child would keep them from being drafted into the Korean War it is not hard to imagine that was Rex's motivation in marrying Maria so quickly. Of course he never intended to take her and the baby with him to Italy based on his history of affairs and not taking her when he went to study at Cranbrook.

RE:

Once again Berlin has portrayed a young woman who wants to be "happy", "in love" paired with a self-absorbed man with a magnetic attraction. Maria at 17 was too young to know her own mind, much less how to deal with Rex. He was able to re-make her as if she were the clay he sculpted, but she was also his vehicle to stay out of the draft. Rex never intended to make Maria a real part of his life in the southwest, let alone Italy.

It was a rather sad story of misplace love and a man who preferred to use women. Rex had no intention of taking her with him and was intent on "creating" her persona.
