Andre insists that he doesn't owe Roy an apology for the way his relationship with Celestial changed. Do you agree? Why or why not?

Andre did not need to apologize for his relationship with Celestial. He was really the one I felt most sorry for in this triangle. He loved her all his life. He was really the best person of all of them.

No, I disagree. Andre did owe Roy an apology because Andre didn’t have to act on his changing feelings for Celestial but he choose to do so and he should have been honest with Roy and apologized for disrespecting Roy’s marriage.

I thought he might owe an apology simply because of the situation. Roy was under the impression that he’d get out and his marriage would continue. Celestial hadn’t been honest about her relationship with Andre in her conversations with Roy.

I think so. He knew that Celestial was married to Roy, and he knew them both. He should have been honest with Ray before he got out of prison.

I do not agree. Andre owes Roy an apology for a few reasons. It was deceitful for him to engage in a romantic relationship with Celestial. It may have been different if Andre didn't know Roy but Andre basically introduced them. He also knew that Roy was possibly not guilty and he knew Roy's struggles of being in prison. He should have been more sympathetic of Roy's situation and should not have taken advantage of the situation.

I have to agree with most who have answered this question already. Andre had feelings for Celestial for a long, long time before he acted on them; he knew her before she was married - he even introduced Celestial to Roy. Andre also knew that Roy was innocent of the charges against him, and he knew that Celestial's family was working to have him proven innocent. I felt he took advantage of Roy's absence to move into a new role with Celestial. She may have been strong in her business life, but in her personal life she remained a needy woman. As a genuine show of friendship to both - he should have encouraged her to be supportive of Roy while he was incarcerated. He definitely owes Roy an apology.

I disagree - he had ample time before Roy and Celestial were married to make a commitment to her, but never did. I think he was dishonest with Roy while he was in prison, and really made no effort to support Roy and celestial's marriage. Celestial's family was supportive of her and of Roy and they should have made that known to her especially recognizing how emotionally weak she was.

It seems as if almost everybody is assigning blame to one character or another. Sometimes there is no blame and no one owes anyone an apology. All of the circumstances in this drama were sad, and it seemed that everyone tried hard to behave well. Considering everything however, if someone has be blamed, Celestial was the "big girl" here. She was the catalyst; she should have stopped this right from the beginning. How can we blame Andre for taking advantage of a situation he had long hoped for? Celestial was playing both sides. Roy was the most blameless; he was the person wronged in every way. I think Celestial is being given too much sympathy for her "neediness." I say, bad on you, Celestial. You encouraged the relationship with Andre and took advantage of him. You were devious and selfish. Those two men were Celestial's victims. As someone else said, Andre was the best of them all, Celestial the worst, Roy caught in the middle. So I started off think no one was too blame and in just a few short sentences, I changed my mind.

I agree that Andre had always had feeling for Celestial, however Roy did not know that and as men who were friends, he should have been honest with Roy and explained what was happening as their relationship began. I think Roy was naive thinking his marriage would be intact when he was released, especially when he was not the perfect husband before jail, and was rather manipulative in his letters and during their visits. That being said, it is all on Celestial to have been honest with Roy and Andre - she was still conflicted and seemed to be allowing men to claim her. She would have done better to have stood on her own two feet and worked on herself before starting another relationship. I do not feel Celestial "owed" Roy her loyalty, people change, move on, and one should never stay in a relationship out of obligation. I doubt Roy would have stayed for her - he couldn't even stay loyal when they were newly married despite his amazement that she had married him.

Mr. Davenport, Celestial's father, pointed out a different reason that an apology might be due - loyalty and support of their black race. Speaking to Andre he said,"I have one thing to say to you, as a black man: Roy is a hostage of the state. He is a victim of America. The least you could do is unhand his wife when he gets back." He continues, "...(Andre is) a so-called friend who doesn't know what it is to be a man, let alone a black man." "He (Roy) didn't do anything but be a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Andre certainly does owe Roy an apology. Roy had every reason to expect his wife to be there when he got out of prison, whether the marriage survived long afterwards or not. Andre moved into Roy’s bedroom in his absence and gave Celestial an engagement ring before there was a divorce. He absolutely owes his supposed best friend an apology. That’s the least he owes him.

I disagree. Andre owes Roy an apology. He entered into to a relationship with a Celestial fully aware that she was married and vulnerable. The fact that he and Roy are friends only makes it worse. I think he and Celestial made an awful situation a thousand times worse.

I agree with those who give good reasons for why Andre should apologize to his friend (?) Roy for not being honest with him about his relationship with Celestial. I have no respect for Andre after he took advantage of Roy's incarceration in order to start a deceitful relationship with Celestial.

I also feel that Andre does owe Roy an apology. Andre took advantage of the fact that Roy was in jail. Andre took it too far by giving Celestial an engagement ring. But it was Celestial who should have been honest with Roy before he got out of prison and who never should have accepted the engagement ring from Andre.

Andre does owe Roy an apology. Roy was his best friend, this is not exactly how a person treats his friend. He knew Celestial from the very beginning and had plenty of time to tell her of his "true" feelings. What was he waiting for? When Roy was out of the picture and Celestial was at a low point in her life and lonely, then he makes his move. He is no gentleman.

While I don't feel as though Andre "owes" Roy an apology, sometimes a gesture, even if it's not as genuine as it should be, can go a long way to repair a damaged relationship. Though, in all honesty, in a situation such as this, I don't believe damages this deep to all parties involved can really be healed.

Maybe not for how Celestial and Roy's relationship changed... But CERTAINLY for beginning a relationship with Celestial. Celestial is at fault for not divorcing Roy before she moved on with Andre. But Andre knew. The right thing would have been to wait until they were divorced. The least thing would be to apologize that he didn't.

Andre had many opportunities to act on his love for Celestial before Roy was ever in the picture. Once Roy is incarcerated, Andre takes advantage of the situation since he is still right by Celestial's side. I say he does owe Roy an apology. Clearly, Roy and Celestial are not going to make a go of their marriage once Roy is released from prison because too much has happened. Still, Andre could be a man and apologize to Roy! Then they all move on.

In my opinion, not only Andre owes Roy an apology, but also Celeste should be the very first to apologize. She was the person Roy married, not Andre. For better or for worse. I think they acted in a cowardly, selfishly and secretive way. I also think that Andre took advantage of Celestial's vulnerability because of the situation she was in. But the sad thing is that they knew he was innocent, and instead of turning to him, they turned against him. So, both owe him an apology.

RE: Andre insists that he doesn't owe Roy an apology for the way his relationship with Celestial changed. Do you agree?

Andre had a thing for his next door neighbor Celestial but never followed through with it despite his mother's advice. Also, Celestial treated the relationship as brother/sister. In college, Roy asked Dre many times if there was more to the relationship and Dre said no. Also, Celestial's father would have preferred And as a son-in-law before the marriage, which may have been another Celestial picked Roy.

Celestial and Roy's hookup in NYC led to the marriage and it appeared that Andre was the best man (gave the toast).

When Celestial did not file for divorce Andre should have stayed clear and definitely no ring!

Therefore, an apology was in order.
