What does home mean to you? Where is your "home"? Why?

The epigraph at the beginning of the book reads "Home isn't where our house is, but wherever we are understood." Emily's home was in Indiana, yet it stopped being the place where people truly knew her. Larkin grew up in Seattle but chose to go home to her grandmother's house in Woodinville because that's where she'd feel best loved. What does home mean to you? Where is your "home"? Why?

I really like the book's definition of home, because feeling understood can have such a huge positive impact on our life.

My definition of home is very similar; for me, home is wherever my closest loved ones are, because they are the ones that understand me and accept me for who I am.

My "home" has always been wherever my parents lived. Granted they lived in some beautiful places, but the locations were not the draw - parental love was. We lived in Truckee, Tahoe City, Graeagle and Colorado. Even as a married woman, I always identified where they were living as my home. After I had been married for 10 years, I finally "weaned" myself and came to realize that my home was where my husband was.

Home is where I am grounded. As a military brat, I lived in many places with my parents that I called home. Then I married at the age of 20, and have been married for 41 years, so now my home is wherever my husband and I live.

Yes, exactly renem! My husband is a retired Marine. We moved a total of 18 times. Home is where the heart is and where you "hang your hat."

As some readers before me noted, my father was in the Army. We moved around a lot. My three siblings were my consistency. We made lots of friends, but we always had each other no matter where home was located. So, home for me is where my family is, which is now ironically in Indiana.

My home will always be where I grew up. I have lived as a married women for 26 years in the same city and still consider the town I grew up in as home.

I think home is where you have happy memories and it is possible to have more than one home. I moved a lot growing up and I consider different locations to be home based on happy events in my life while in those places.

RE: What does home mean to you? Where is your

Home to me is where I’m comfortable, where I feel safe and so it is not necessarily one place. My family lived-lives in a small town in really northern New York. We moved there when I was in my last year of high school. I had come from a large school on Long Island to a really small one upstate and I went off to college without thinking of this place as home. It wasn’t until many, many years later when I would go up to take care of my mother and a very ill sister, staying for a month or more to give my sister the caretaker some fresh air. That’s when it became “home” to me. In recent years I have split time between Florida and NYC but I’ve spent 55 years in the city and as I walk around different areas, see so many people from everywhere, I know this is my home, this is the place that comforts me and calls my name. But when I’m sailing in Sarasota I feel the wind and smell the sea and here I am, home again. I’m delighted to have these different senses of what home is to me.

Home is where I find peace and right now that is in an old farmhouse in the woods of central Texas.

Home is safety. Home is love. Home is being grounded. Home can be anywhere that you feel those aforementioned things. It can be in a motor home on the move, in another persons house, or in a permanent dwelling of your own. Safety, love and a the feeling of being grounded are the ingredients that count. The type of dwelling is not important. It is the surrounding people and feelings that are most important.

It seems as if everyone is pretty much on the same page when it comes to defining "home". Home is truly where the heart is...all the emotions that are conjured up. Love, warmth, understanding, safety, family. Not necessarily a physical location.

Home is less about where my biological family lives. It is my husband and the place that is home to me. We recently moved to N.C in a great community. Trees, friends".... my family is composed of friends all over, children I helped raise people who love and support me as I do them.
