About this book

Book Summary

A witch and her young ward discover a magical, walking house and learn the true meaning of home in this cozy, enchanting novel from New York Times bestselling author Jaleigh Johnson.

Evelyn Sharpe is accustomed to dealing with natural disasters as a land witch, but she longs for a life with a little less danger for her and her adopted daughter, Ruby. So when the opportunity to take over as Caretaker of Thornwood House—a sentient home that acts as the magical heart of the village of Iskendra—arises, it seems almost fated.

When they arrive in sunny Iskendra, Evie and Ruby find the house is nothing like what they expected: First of all, it has walked away from the address. Thornwood House is also grumpy, guarded, and extremely hesitant to allow the two witches through its doors.

Armed with gentle hearts and wild magic, Evie and Ruby begin to form tentative bonds with the house and the citizens of the small town. But there's something deeply damaged about the building seeping into the forests surrounding Iskendra, and Evie will have to use all her power to protect the roots she's started to grow.

  1. In the novel, magic is limited and heavily entwined with the natural world. In what ways do we see this manifest with Evie's powers as a land witch? What parallels can we draw to our own world and its natural resources?
  2. If you could have a garden with magical plants, what would you want to grow?
  3. Evie and Ignatius clash over the care of Thornwood house. How do their assumptions shape their perceptions of each other, and how do those perceptions change throughout the novel?
  4. Ruby has the power of farseeing, but she can only see into someone's future so many times before that power is exhausted forever. In what ways does that magic affect her character and the decisions she makes? If you had the power to see just one ...

Media Reviews

"Johnson weaves a sumptuous tale around the themes of chosen family and new beginnings. With shades of Howl's Moving Castle and Baba Yaga folktales, this playful fantasy charms." —Publishers Weekly

"Johnson is skilled at portraying Evie's deep love for her daughter and the ways Thornwood house cares for those who live in it...This cozy fantasy should appeal to fans of Sarah Beth Durst and TJ Klune, with familiar and comfortable tropes of found families and second chances, plus a gentle romance." —Library Journal

"Johnson has created something from the soul here — a story warm-hearted and full of wild magic that feels like slipping back into a half-remembered dream. The prose is luminous, the atmosphere, luxuriantly cosy; it's cottagecore, but the cottage is sentient and has an attitude. Running throughout is a deft exploration of family, mother-daughter love, and what it means to find a place to call home. The Reimagining of Thornwood House is for those who love their fantasy sweet, ethereal, Ghibliesque, with some slightly spooky dark corners." —Brigitte Knightley, New York Times bestselling author of The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy

"Absolutely delightful! The Reimagining of Thornwood House is everything you want it to be: warm, wonderful, and magical in all the best ways! I loved every page! A new favorite!" —Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

"Each page of The Reimagining of Thornwood House is a hug that will warm your soul. Jaleigh Johnson has made an inspiring delight for anyone longing to begin again." —Samantha Sotto Yambao, national bestselling author of Water Moon

"Achingly lovely and full of warmth, The Reimagining of Thornwood House evokes a rare comfort — the kind that makes you feel like a child again, tucked into bed, listening to a fairy tale you never want to end. A truly magical book." —Auralee Wallace, national bestselling author of The Late-Night Witches

"The Reimagining of Thornwood House is like drinking hot cocoa from your favorite mug after a long day—warm, sweet, and comforting. Jaleigh Johnson's lovely writing effortlessly weaves themes of belonging and community into a magical story that is filled to the brim with kindness and whimsy. Cozy fantasy lovers will feel right at home in Thornwood House!" —Emily Krempholtz, USA Today bestselling author of Violet Thistlewaite is Not a Villain Anymore

"The Reimagining of Thornwood House is an utter delight, packed with charming characters, small-town hijinks, and a grumpy house that is hiding more than it seems under its shingles. I loved the strength of the bond between Evie and Ruby, the sweet blossoming romance, and the overarching message that people (and houses) are not always what they seem! Magical, whimsical, and full of heart!" —Keshe Chow, international bestselling author of Strange Familiars

Fantastic and Heartwarming Story!
This was the perfect read and definitely 5 stars. It was like being wrapped up in a fluffy, soft, and cozy hug. I always love these kinds of stories with found families, magic, love and more. It, for sure, met my hopes and expectations for a great read that lifted my spirits and made me want to spend more time in this world. This is one story you shouldn't miss!

Exactly the uplifting book I needed
Some might say that this book was light or predictable, and indeed, cozy fantasies can be described fairly with these words. However, in a stressful world, I really appreciated the author's hopeful, warm writing voice. The core of the plot is a love story between Evie and her foster daughter, Ruby, and the story plays out in a magical house in a whimsical village. I loved the way Evie's relationship with Ruby was portrayed, and I found myself charmed by the house, the village, and the people. There were definitely some surprises in the story. The book also raised good questions about how we become the people we want to be. I was impressed with the way the author humanized and held out hope for some of the less savory characters. The writing was uncluttered, and the book was just a pleasure to read. Another author, Katherine Center, writes (in defense of romance novels) that a predictable arc doesn't make a story less valuable; rather, much of the fun lies in the optimism of the reading process and the details of how the story plays out. These ideas apply perfectly to The Reimagining of Thornwood House, too. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Reimagining of Thornwood House
"The Reimagining of Thornwood House" is bursting with whimsy and charm. The mother daughter relationship is wonderfully written, and the villagers they befriend add extra dimension. The mix of the mundane and the magical creates such a cozy atmosphere.

Wonderful, magical story
I loved this! A wonderful tale about love and friendship and finding home. The characters are well developed, and the book is well written. This story brought a smile to my face and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Imagination and Magic
I loved this book. The characters were very likeable and easy to relate with. Evie's ability for magic didn't overwhelm her character like some fantasy stories do. I loved all that she did to help Ruby and get the adoption approved. I loved her courage and wisdom. I think it would be a great book for a book club discussion.

Fun, engaging and enjoyable read
Being completely honest, I haven't finished this book yet but am totally engaged in the story while about 1/3 of the way in. Being a horticulturalist, I'm loving the nature and land connections. I love the house as its' own character. It is one of those books that when I put it down, I don't feel stressed, sad or disappointed.
