About this book

Book Summary

A kaleidoscopic portrait of a modern American family—steadfast, complicated, begrudging, and loving—from the bestselling author of Isola.

Was this just a brief skirmish, or the beginning of a thirty-year feud? In the Rubinstein family, it could go either way.

When their beloved sister passes away, Sylvia and Helen Rubinstein are unmoored. A misunderstanding about apple cake turns into a decade of stubborn silence. Busy with their own lives—divorces, dating, career setbacks, college applications, bat mitzvahs and ballet recitals—their children do not want to get involved. As for their grandchildren? Impossible.

With This Is Not About Us, master storyteller Allegra Goodman—whose prior collection was heralded as "one of the most astute and engaging books about American family life" (The Boston Globe)—returns to the form and subject that endeared her to legions of readers. Sharply observed and laced with humor, This Is Not About Us is a story of growing up and growing old, the weight of parental expectations, and the complex connection between sisters—a big-hearted book about the love that binds a family across generations.

What are you reading this week? And what did you think of last week’s books? (4/30/2026)
I just finished Isola by Allegra Goodman. It's good historical fiction. A bit grim at times, but overall a good read. Ready to start Daughter of Egypt by Marie Benedict. I've read a number of Benedict's books and have liked all of them.

Did you read Isola by Allegra Goodman? I thought it was a very interesting depiction of historical events. It also garnered some prizes, I think. At least made it onto some prize lists.

Kirkus finalists announced!
That's a good one, @Gabi_J ! One of the interesting things about https://www.bookbrowse.com/reviews/index.cfm/book_number/4993/isola Isola is that while Allegra Goodman has written several books, it's her only work of historical fiction. I've read most of her books, and while her literary fiction...

Just started Wild Fire by Ann Cleeves, a part of her Shetland series. Also finished up listening to Isola by Allegra Goodman, based on a recommendation from someone on BB. What audience would you recommend Broken Country to? Is there another book or author you’d recommend that you feel has a similar theme or style?
Those who like a romance if it's part of a mystery with lots of twist and turns! I'm currently reading Charlotte McConaghy's Wild Dark Shore and would recommend it as being similar. It is an atmospheric, isolated Island murder mystery with a romance buried in that I'm very much enjoying! I would ...

Media Reviews

"Like an exquisitely baked apple cake, Goodman's delicious and deeply perceptive novel is something to savor." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"[A] bighearted linked story collection... Each story succeeds on its own; taken together, they reveal how a family's bonds are shaped and tested by tradition as well as by each individual's recurring patterns. In their messiness and constant striving for harmony, the Rubinsteins are wholly relatable. This is one to treasure." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Astute, incisive, and soulfully witty, Goodman circulates among her irresistible characters to that each intriguing point of view reveals another facet of their tumultuous family dynamic." —Booklist (starred review)

Stellar family story telling
Allegra Goodman consistently offers literate well written and compelling family stories. This is Not About Us is no exception. This is a sprawling tale about the Rubinstein family - three sisters, their offspring, spouses, in-laws and grandchildren. While chapters are told from a different perspective of a family member or someone adjacent to the family, the novel feels extremely cohesive and each chapter moves the various plots and subplots along at a compelling clip. Goodman absolutely nails the life of an east Coast Jewish American family - the guilt, the wry and sarcastic humour, the generational divides, the recriminations and the feuds - oy! the feuds! Indeed a feud about an apple cake brought to a shiva sets off an epic battle. My only complaint is that this book ended - I fervently hope Goodman will bring back the Rubinsteins in another novel.

Family time
I love the Allegra Goodman books I’ve read. She has a mastery over telling family stories as in The Cookbook Collector – and even Isola which is based on family story. So I was so glad to get approval from NetGalley and Random House to read it – thank you!

There’s a feud in the Rubenstein family between sisters Sylvia and Helen over a recipe for an apple cake. Each chapter in the book explores this except through a different member of the family. This creates a “kaleidoscope” of a multigenerational family and how they experience each other – family drama is so angsty. Having these varying perspectives brings a richness to the story – sometimes the people we least think about or think more about have such a different perspective on you than you realize. I think this is the beauty of the book.

But remarkably in spite of everything, the Rubensteins care about each other.

I liked the food references in the book – kumquat is such a cool word! I think cooking and food in other books I’ve read reflect family so well – let’s face it we all have to eat. Gathering to share a meal is the consummate metaphor for love in my opinion.

While the book is not a linear story but short stories around the topic of family, I think it worked in the telling. A fine read!

Vignettes more than a linear story
This Is Not About Us is a family saga about a multi-generational Jewish family. Starting with the death of one of three elderly sisters, it follows the remaining sisters, the children and grandchildren. There were numerous characters here, but I struggled to become invested with any of them. At times, the book felt more like vignettes about them rather than a straightforward storyline. It’s very character, as opposed to plot, driven.

No one is having an easy or a happy life. And that’s part of the problem. The book’s a bit of a downer. And too many of the characters were just petty and unable to see beyond their own narrow focus. The book works best when they manage to move beyond their grievances and find common ground with their siblings/children. My favorite character was Debra, who was so gracious. And then the book just sort of ends.

I adore Allegra Goodman but this one was more of a miss than a hit for me.
My thanks to Netgalley and Random House for an advance copy of this book.
